Abstract
Mussels serve as useful indicators of temporal trends in environmental quality because they accumulate some contaminants in their tissue at levels many time higher than in the surrounding water and they quickly to chances in contamination. The pollution by toxic metals of marine environment in Turkey was examined by analyzing Mytilus galloprovincialis which naturally grow on the Bosphorus. Samples were analyzed monthly from September 1995 to July 1997. The concentrations of some trace (Cu, Zn, Ni,..) and t oxic metals ( Pb) in the element concentration of the mussels were determinate by using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. Concentrations of copper, lead and zinc were found to vary seasonally in the Bosphorus locations. An inverse relationship between metal concentration and sampling date is also significant in the case of lead.
